O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree!

Last year, Shirley Figueroa, a retired public servant from the Bronx, and her wife, bought a house in Wallkill, NY—almost two hours north of New York City.

According to The New York Times, their new house came with “a towering Norway spruce” that a Rockefeller Center tree scout had already previously spotted before the couple bought the home.

Figueroa’s 72-foot tall tree was lit last night at a star-studded tree lighting ceremony in Rockefeller Center, which included performances from Kellie Pickler, Martina McBride, Billy Porter, and Diana Ross.

“Just the fact that I have a tree that I can donate when I came from somewhere that had no trees—it’s so surreal,” said Figueroa, referring to the tree-less block in the Bronx where she grew up.

This is the first tree in Rockefeller Center history to be donated by a same-sex or Latina couple (both Figueroa and her wife are Puerto Rican).

We knew this fir seemed extra fierce!

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was “just the cutest thing ever.”
