In a new interview with The Guardian, singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes got real about being one of the most talked-about 20-year-olds in the world.

The “In My Blood” singer, whose pop tracks have already scored him two Grammy noms, spoke candidly about growing up in the spotlight. He also addressed rumors about his sexuality, which have persisted despite Mendes insisting he’s “not gay”—and that his sexuality shouldn’t matter—on social media.

“For me, it’s hurtful,” he told The Guardian, referring to a Rolling Stone profile from November 2018 that focused in part on speculations about his sexuality. “I get mad when people assume things about me because I imagine the people who don’t have the support system I have and how that must affect them. That was why I was so angry, and you can see I still get riled up, because I don’t think people understand that when you come at me about something that’s stupid you hurt so many other people.”

“They might not be speaking,” he added, “but they’re listening.”

It’s hardly the first time Mendes has addressed the gay rumors; his Rolling Stone cover story from last year promptly blew up, reigniting the speculation anew. On Twitter, fans even dragged out actor-comedian Todrick Hall for joking about Mendes’s sexuality shortly after the story went live.

So, yes, while we can all agree that Mendes is an absolute heartthrob in his #MyCalvins underwear campaign, perhaps it’s time to finally stop spreading gossip about who this young celeb is attracted to.

Mendes says it well himself: “I’m 20, and I just want to have fun.”
