Javier Muñoz, who took over the lead in Hamilton from creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, has worked magic on Broadway. Now the out 41-year-old is going to castingspell on the small screenwith a role on Freeform’s Shadowhunters that places him against sexy bi warlock Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.).

“You know I’m a fan of the show—I’m a fan of this genre,” Muñoz said in a homemade video from New York Comic Con in October. “I’m already in love with this character and I can’t wait for you to meet him.”

Not much is known about his character, Lorenzo Ray—he’s from Spain, he’s centuries-old, and he and Magnus are rivals. the “sexy Hamilton” also teased that fans will love to hate the character, who is “really good at magic.”

Playing Shum’s adversary was the hardest part of the role, he admits, because he’s such a fan of the Magnus character: For two seasons now, viewers have seen the evolution of the romantic relationship between the sexy ancient magician and Alex Lightwood (Matthew Daddario), a gay demon hunter.

“I’m strong and I’m very out about [my status] because of the stigma still attached to it,” he told The New York Times last year. “But I’ve had a healthy fear about my health since I tested positive, and I asked how to test myself for lumps, because both my parents had cancer. And very early on in my learning how to do a self-examination, I found the lump.”

Shadowhunters returns to Freeform on April 3.
