Interview with Eric Anderson, PhD. Expert in the field of homophobia and sports.
The Last Closet is a web campaign and video project to end homophobia in men’s professional sports. There has never been a male athlete in any of the top five American major professional sports leagues who has come out publicly while actively playing. Through in-depth interviews with the current sports hierarchy, TLC examines the obstacles preventing this historic event from taking place.
Why does this issue matter? Not only is it important for all levels of sport to be inclusive but, given the prevalence of bias-based bullying and gay teen suicide, there is a strong need for role models for LGBT youth. Just one professional athlete saying the words, “I’m a pro athlete and I’m gay,” would make a difference in the lives of those kids struggling with self-acceptance.
